FRIENDS OF JESUS: The Unfailing Power of Walking in Love
FRIENDS OF JESUS:
The Unfailing Power of Walking in Love
By Nicholas Uanikhoba
"Therefore, doth My Father love Me, because I lay down My life, that I might take it again. No man taketh it from Me, but I lay it down of Myself. I have power to lay it down, and I have power to take it again. This commandment have I received of My Father." (John 10:17–18).
God is love. But for His love to reach a
fallen world, the Son had to obey the Father’s command. Love alone could not
save us. It required an obedient sacrifice.
"For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son..." (John 3:16)
In the same way, Jesus now calls us to
live in this flow of obedient love. Just as the Father needed Jesus’s obedience
for His love to reach us, Jesus now needs our obedience for His love to reach
others.
That is why love is a commandment, not a
suggestion.
It was a commandment for Jesus. It is a
commandment for us:
"This is My commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you." (John 15:12)
Obeying this command gives God great
pleasure. It allows Him to be fully expressed through us. In truth, the
greatest resistance to God’s work on earth is the unwillingness of believers to
walk in love.
Yet we can only abide in the secure
place of God’s love by choosing to walk in obedient love toward
others. Every time you walk in love, you are obeying the Lord Jesus Himself.
LIVING AS A FRIEND OF JESUS
Jesus said:
"As the Father hath loved Me, so have I loved you: continue ye in My love. If ye keep My commandments, ye shall abide in My love; even as I have kept My Father’s commandments and abide in His love." (John 15:9–10).
We often speak about God’s unconditional
love, and it is a glorious truth. God loved us while we were still sinners
(Romans 5:8).
But Jesus calls us to something deeper:
to abide in that love through obedience.
Abiding love is not passive. It says:
"Because you love me, I will obey you joyfully."
And here is the amazing promise:
"Ye are My friends, if ye do whatsoever I command you." (John 15:14)
Living as a friend of Jesus means
walking in loving obedience, not out of fear, but out of delight and trust.
LOVE NEVER FAILS THE ONE WHO OBEYS IT
We must never forget that walking in
love is not a weakness. It is the power of resurrection at work.
"No man taketh it from Me, but I lay it down of Myself. I have power to lay it down, and I have power to take it again. This commandment have I received of My Father." (John 10:18)
When Jesus laid down His life in love,
He did not lose it; He took it up again in glorious resurrection.
The same is true for us. Walking in love
may be sacrificial, painful at times to the flesh. You may be misunderstood,
unappreciated, or even mistreated. But here is the promise:
You will ultimately lose nothing by walking in love.
God Himself watches over those who walk
in love. He restores what is laid down in obedience.
"Love never fails." (1 Corinthians 13:8)
When you obey the love commandment, you
step into resurrection territory. Whatever you seem to lay down in love, God can
raise it up, with multiplied glory.
LESSON FROM HOW A PASTOR SHOULD PRACTICE LOVE
One of the most beautiful pictures of
love in action is Jesus’ restoration of Peter.
Three times Jesus asked Peter: “Do
you love Me?”
And each time, He connected love with obedient action:
"Feed My lambs... Feed My sheep." (John 21:15–17).
The pastoral calling is a call to
sacrificial love, expressed primarily through the faithful feeding of the flock.
"And I will give you pastors according to Mine heart, which shall feed you with knowledge and understanding." (Jeremiah 3:15).
True love in ministry is not necessarily
about building platforms or seeking applause. It is about feeding God’s people
with truth, patiently and faithfully, even when misunderstood.
There is no human system that can
adequately pay for such labour.
But here is the encouragement:
If you serve out of love and obedience,
you step into Jesus’ supernatural reward system, one not governed by men, but
by heaven itself.
HERE IS HOW JESUS DESCRIBES THAT REWARD SYSTEM
"Ye are My friends, if ye do whatsoever I command you." (John 15:14)
Walking in friendship with Jesus is not
just a spiritual experience; it is a lifestyle of love and obedience.
When you live this way, you step into a
supernatural reward system:
• A life of deep peace
• A heart free from bitterness
• The joy of knowing you are pleasing Jesus
• Eternal rewards that can never be taken away
"I in them, and Thou in Me, that they may be made perfect in one; and that the world may know that Thou hast sent Me, and hast loved them, as Thou hast loved Me." (John 17:23).
Jesus is the Friend who sticks closer
than a brother.
He will never leave you nor forsake you.
He will care for you in ways you cannot yet understand.
Walking in love is living as a friend of
Jesus, and it is a life that ultimately can never be defeated.
Shalom!
