True Worship: When God Reveals Himself
(Lessons from Moses in Exodus 34:6-10)
"And the LORD passed before him and proclaimed, 'The LORD, the LORD God, merciful and gracious, longsuffering, and abounding in goodness and truth, keeping mercy for thousands, forgiving iniquity and transgression and sin...' So Moses made haste and bowed his head toward the earth, and worshiped." — Exodus 34:6-8 (NKJV)
Worship is not just about music or songs. True worship is a response to the revelation of who God is.
In Exodus 34:6-10, we see a powerful encounter between God and Moses that teaches us what true worship looks like when we see God's character clearly. Let's explore this together.
1. God Reveals His Character — Worship Begins with Knowing Who God Is
Before Moses says a word, God reveals Himself:
"The LORD, the LORD God, merciful and gracious, longsuffering, and abounding in goodness and truth, keeping mercy for thousands, forgiving iniquity and transgression and sin..." (Exodus 34:6-7)
God starts by declaring His mercy, grace, patience, and faithfulness.
✅ True worship starts with revelation — seeing God for who He really is.
✅ It's not about what we want but responding to the goodness of God.
Reflection:
Have you paused lately to reflect on God's mercy, grace, and patience toward you?
2. Moses' Immediate Response — Worship in Humility and Awe
"So Moses made haste and bowed his head toward the earth, and worshiped." (Exodus 34:8)
Notice Moses' response:
- He "made haste" — he didn't delay.
- He bowed low — a posture of humility and surrender.
When we truly see God's character, the natural response is to bow in worship — acknowledging His greatness and our need for Him.
✅ Worship is a posture of the heart, not just an action of the body.
Reflection:
Do I approach God with hurried requests, or do I pause to worship in awe of who He is?
3. Worship Flows into Intercession — Seeking God’s Presence and Mercy for Others
"If now I have found grace in Your sight, O Lord, let my Lord, I pray, go among us, even though we are a stiff-necked people; and pardon our iniquity and our sin, and take us as Your inheritance." (Exodus 34:9)
Moses doesn't stop at worship — he begins to intercede:
- He pleads for God’s presence to stay with His people.
- He asks for forgiveness for their sins.
✅ True worship moves us beyond ourselves — we begin to carry others in prayer.
✅ Worship makes us intercessors, not just seekers.
Reflection:
How can my worship move beyond me to include praying for others around me?
4. God's Covenant Response — God Responds to True Worship
"Behold, I make a covenant..." (Exodus 34:10)
God responds to Moses’ worship and intercession by reaffirming His covenant.
- He promises to do wonders among His people.
- God’s presence and power are released when we worship from the heart.
✅ Worship opens the door to deeper relationship and God’s promises.
Reflection:
What covenant promises has God made to me that I can hold onto as I worship?
5. God's Reign Becomes Personal When You Belong to Him
Although God reigns over all creation, only those who belong to Him through faith in Christ truly experience the joy and blessing of His reign.
"But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, to those who believe in His name." — John 1:12 (NKJV)
Knowing God reigns is one thing — but when He reigns in your heart, you can face every trial confidently.
"If God is for us, who can be against us?" — Romans 8:31 (NKJV)
✅ His reign becomes a source of peace and assurance.
✅ If you have not yet surrendered to Christ, today is the day to receive Him and live under His loving reign.
Conclusion: Worship as a Response to Revelation
When Moses saw who God is, he bowed and worshiped immediately. This is the pattern for us:
- First, God reveals Himself.
- Then, we respond in worship.
- From worship flows intercession, and from that comes God’s covenant blessings.
So today, let’s remember:
🙌 True worship is a heart bowed before God's mercy, grace, and truth.
💬 It’s an invitation to seek Him, to carry others in prayer, and to walk in His promises.
Reflection Questions:
- What aspect of God's character speaks to you most today?
- How does your worship reflect a response to who God is?
- Who can you intercede for as part of your worship?
Prayer:
Lord, thank You for revealing Yourself as merciful, gracious, patient, and faithful. Help me to respond with true worship — a heart bowed in awe. Let my worship overflow into intercession for others. And as I worship, let me walk in the fullness of Your covenant. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
