THE NAME OF JESUS: AUTHORITY OF OUR SURETY
“By so much was Jesus made a SURETY of a better testament.” — Hebrews 7:22 (KJV)
In a previous article, we explored Jesus: The Surety of the New Testament — our divine Guarantor who secured our salvation. If you haven’t read it yet, check it out here. Today, let’s explore how His role as our Surety gives us authority to use His Name — a Name that carries binding power in heaven, on earth, and over the forces of darkness (Philippians 2:9–11).
Understanding this connection is key to walking in the full benefits of our covenant with God.
A Surety’s Name Holds Legal Power
In the natural world, a surety’s name and reputation act as collateral in legal and financial agreements. If you have a guarantor for a loan, you borrow on the strength of their name, not your own.
Likewise, believers approach God and the spiritual realm in the Name of Jesus—not in our own name. His Name is legally binding because He secured our standing with God through His death, resurrection, and ongoing intercession.
Biblical Witness:
“Whatever you ask in My name, that I will do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son. If you ask anything in My name, I will do it.” — John 14:13–14 (NKJV)
“Whatever you do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus...” — Colossians 3:17 (NKJV)
Since Jesus stands as our Surety, His Name is our legal access to the Father and to divine resources.
The Name of Jesus Grants Access to Heavenly Resources
Just as a surety grants financial access based on their credit, Jesus’ Name grants us access to everything in God’s kingdom. This includes:
✅ Salvation (Acts 4:12)
✅ Healing (Mark 16:17–18)
✅ Deliverance (Luke 10:17)
✅ Answered Prayer (John 16:23–24)
✅ Victory over Satan (Philippians 2:9–11)
When we invoke the Name of Jesus, we are not standing in our own merit—we are standing in His identity and authority.
For example, when Peter and John healed the lame man, Peter said:
“In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, rise up and walk.” — Acts 3:6 (NKJV)
The miracle did not happen because of their holiness, but because of the Name of Jesus, which had been given to them as a legal right (Acts 3:16).
Note: This does not minimize the importance of holiness; rather, even holiness is accessed by faith in His Name.
Because Jesus pledged Himself as our Surety, His Name guarantees our access to the Father’s power.
The Name of Jesus Is Our Legal Weapon Against the Enemy
A surety’s guarantee is enforceable by law. In the same way, the Name of Jesus is enforceable in the spiritual realm, giving believers authority over demonic forces.
Biblical Witness:
“In My name they will cast out demons...” — Mark 16:17 (NKJV)
“Lord, even the demons are subject to us in Your name!” — Luke 10:17 (NKJV)
Just as the name of a legal surety forces compliance in the natural world, the Name of Jesus forces compliance in the spiritual world.
The Name of Jesus Guarantees Our Prayers Before God
In legal settings, a surety stands in for another person’s obligations, ensuring that their request is honored. Jesus does this in our prayer life:
✅ We don’t approach God in our own merit.
✅ We come in Jesus’ Name, and the Father recognizes it as if Jesus Himself were making the request.
Biblical Witness:
“Whatever you ask the Father in My name He will give you.” — John 16:23 (NKJV)
“For through Him we both have access by one Spirit to the Father.” — Ephesians 2:18 (NKJV)
Since Jesus is our Surety, His Name carries the full weight of His perfect obedience, atoning sacrifice, resurrection, and ongoing intercession.
When we pray in His Name, we are presenting a heaven-backed guarantee before the throne of God—praying from the throne of Christ Himself.
THE NAME OF JESUS IS BACKED BY HIS SURETYSHIP
In conclusion, the principle of suretyship explains why the Name of Jesus is powerful:
🔥 We do not stand in our own name—we stand in His!
🔥 We do not pray in our own name—we pray in His!
🔥 We do not fight the enemy in our own name—we fight in His!
Because Jesus is our Surety, His Name is the legally binding seal that grants us access to all the benefits of the New Covenant.
