The Mercy of God: The Power Behind Divine Help
It is striking that when God introduced Himself to Moses, He chose to describe His character — not His power.
"The LORD, the LORD God, merciful and gracious, longsuffering, and abundant in goodness and truth..." (Exodus 34:6-7).
This shows us something profound: God's power flows from His character, and at the very heart of His character is mercy and justice.
1. Mercy: The Motivation Behind God’s Power
God does not use His power randomly. His mercy and justice are what motivates Him to act on behalf of His people.
Throughout Scripture, we see that those who cry for mercy are asking for God's intervention — for His power to be released into their lives.
Consider these prayers:
- "God, be merciful to me, a sinner" (Luke 18:13).
- "Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me" (Luke 18:38).
When God shows mercy, it’s not just a feeling — it’s His power in action, bringing deliverance, healing, forgiveness, and restoration. That's why the Bible says God "showed mercy" to Elizabeth (Luke 1:58), breaking her barrenness by His intervention.
2. The Connection Between Mercy and Power
Psalm 62:11-12 reveals this profound link:
"God has spoken once, twice I have heard this: that power belongs to God. Also to You, O Lord belongs mercy."
Power and mercy belong together. God’s power serves His mercy, and His mercy releases His power to meet human needs.
Psalm 136 emphasizes this over and over:
"For His mercy endures forever."
Every mighty act of God — in creation, deliverance, and provision — is rooted in His mercy.
3. How to Activate God’s Mercy and Power
Scripture shows that those who need God's help often appeal to His mercy, and praising His mercy can unlock His intervention.
For example, when Judah faced a great enemy, King Jehoshaphat and the people praised the mercy of God — and God's power brought them victory (2 Chronicles 20:21-22).
When God shows mercy, it breaks long-standing afflictions — whether barrenness, sickness, oppression, or fear. God's mercy overcomes every impossibility.
However, to experience this mercy, we must first believe in His power.
This is why Jesus asked the blind men:
"Do you believe that I can do this?" (Matthew 9:28).
If we doubt God's ability, we hinder His mercy. Mercy flows on the current of God's omnipotence.
4. Jesus: God's Mercy and Justice Personified
Ultimately, Jesus Christ is the full expression of God’s mercy and justice. Through His death, burial, and resurrection, Jesus satisfied God’s justice and opened wide the door of mercy for all who believe.
"For I will be merciful to their unrighteousness, and their sins and their lawless deeds I will remember no more." (Hebrews 8:12 NKJV)
This verse shows us that God's mercy is the foundation of the New Covenant — forgiveness and restoration flow from His merciful heart. His mercy means He no longer holds our sins against us because Jesus paid the full price for them.
In the New Covenant, we receive mercy not because of our goodness, but because of Christ's finished work.
"Let us therefore come boldly to the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy and find grace to help in time of need." (Hebrews 4:16).
We approach God confidently for mercy because Jesus, our High Priest, has made a way.
5. How to Access God’s Mercy Today
If you desire God's mercy and power in your life, here are key steps:
- Believe in His power — Settle in your heart that God can help.
- Appeal to His mercy, not your merit — Trust Christ’s work, not your performance.
- Praise His mercy — Worship activates God’s intervention (Psalm 136; 2 Chronicles 20:21).
- Come boldly through Jesus — He is God's mercy in person (Hebrews 4:16).
6. Final Word
God’s mercy is His heart inclined to help us. And when He acts in mercy, His power goes to work to save, heal, deliver, and restore.
So if you are facing challenges today — cry out for His mercy. Praise His mercy. Trust His power. Rest in Christ's finished work.
Because the God of mercy is also the God of power, and He is ready to act on your behalf!
