God’s Answer to Loneliness: Placing the Solitary in Families
By Nicholas Uanikhoba
"God sets the lonely in families." — Psalm 68:6 (NIV)
Introduction: The Silent Plague of Our Times
We live in a hyper-connected world. With just a tap on our phones, we can reach people across the globe. Yet, loneliness has become one of the greatest plagues of our generation.
Behind the smiles, selfies, and endless updates, many are silently battling isolation — feeling unseen, unknown, and unloved. And while loneliness can affect anyone, from teenagers to the elderly, God has already provided a solution.
Psalm 68:6 gives us a beautiful glimpse of God's heart:
"God sets the lonely in families."
Let’s explore what this means — and how you and I can be part of God’s answer to this silent epidemic.
God Sees and Cares for the Lonely
First, let's settle this truth: God sees the lonely, and He cares.
From the very beginning, God said, “It is not good for man to be alone” (Genesis 2:18). Human beings were created for connection — to be in a relationship with God and with one another.
Loneliness was never part of God's plan. His desire is to bring us into community, into families where we are loved, known, and valued.
Why Loneliness Is So Common Today
Loneliness is widespread in today's world for several reasons:
1. Digital Connections Without Real Relationships
We may have hundreds of online "friends" but still lack deep, meaningful connections. A "like" on a post is not the same as a friend sitting with you in a tough season.
2. Broken Families and Relationships
Divorce, abuse, and dysfunction have left many people without supportive family ties.
3. A Culture of Individualism
Our society often emphasizes being "independent," — but God designed us to be interdependent and to need one another.
4. Life Transitions
People move, lose loved ones, or experience major life changes that leave them isolated.
God’s Solution: Families, Community, and Spiritual Connections
Psalm 68:6 reminds us that God places the solitary in families. But what does that look like in everyday life?
1. The Church as God’s Family
God’s people — the Church — are called to be the living answer to loneliness. The early church in Acts 2:42-47 shared life together. They:
- Ate meals together.
- Prayed together.
- Supported one another.
Church isn’t just a Sunday event; it’s family — a home for the lonely.
2. Real Relationships Beyond Titles
Sometimes, the family God gives us isn’t biological — it’s the friend who checks in, the mentor who listens, and the group that prays with us. A spiritual family is just as real and powerful.
How Can We Be Part of the Solution?
If loneliness is a plague, God has called us to be part of His cure. Here are practical ways we can make a difference:
1. Notice People
Look beyond your circle. Who is sitting alone? Who hasn’t been around? A smile or a simple conversation could mean the world to someone.
2. Create Safe Spaces
Be the person people can trust — a safe place to be real. Sometimes, just listening without judgment is all someone needs.
3. Practice Hospitality
Invite others into your life. You don’t need to be perfect. Share a meal, go for coffee — small acts of kindness build big bridges.
4. Be Consistent
Healing from loneliness takes time. Keep reaching out, even when people pull back. Consistency builds trust.
5. Support Small Groups and Communities
If you’re part of a church or organization, support small groups, Bible studies, or community meet-ups — places where real relationships are built.
A Word for Those Feeling Lonely
If you are feeling lonely today, hear this:
- God sees you.
- You matter.
- You belong.
Ask God to guide you to the right people, and don't be afraid to take a step — whether reaching out to a local church, a support group, or even a trusted person in your life.
God is still in the business of placing the lonely in families — and He will do it for you.
Let’s Be the Family Someone Needs
Loneliness may be the plague of our time, but God has a cure — and He wants to use us.
Imagine a world where no one feels invisible, where people find love, belonging, and hope. It starts with you and me.
So, let’s be God’s hands and heart to someone today — because no one should have to walk alone.
If this message resonated with you, feel free to share it — you never know who may need to hear it today.
