THE ULTIMATE PRIVILEGE: Sons of God and the Covenant of Grace
All human beings are born as sons of men, inheriting the fallen nature of Adam. However, through faith in Jesus Christ, we become sons of God, adopted into His family and granted supernatural privileges that far exceed anything our earthly lineage could provide.
One of the greatest privileges of being a child of God is divine rescue from judgment—both in this life and in eternity. A powerful biblical example illustrates this truth through the story of Mephibosheth, the grandson of Saul.
Mephibosheth: A Picture of Covenant Privilege
When David became king of Israel, he honoured a covenant he had made with Jonathan, the son of Saul. Though Mephibosheth was naturally a descendant of Saul, an enemy of David, he was adopted into David’s household because of this covenant (1 Samuel 20:14-17, 42; 2 Samuel 9).
Later, when judgment came upon Saul’s house due to his past sins, seven of his descendants were handed over for execution. However, Mephibosheth was spared—not because of his merit, but because of the covenant David had made with Jonathan.
"Let seven men of Saul's sons be delivered unto us, and we will hang them up unto the LORD in Gibeah of Saul, whom the LORD did choose. And the king (David) said, ‘I will give them.’ But the king spared Mephibosheth, the son of Jonathan the son of Saul, because of the LORD’S OATH that was between them, between David and Jonathan the son of Saul."
(2 Samuel 21:6-7).
This story is a shadow of the greater covenant that God made through Jesus Christ.
Our Privilege in Christ: The Ultimate Covenant
Like Mephibosheth, we were born under the curse of sin, destined for judgment. However, because of the new covenant in Christ, we are adopted as sons of God and spared from the ultimate judgment of eternal separation from God.
Hell places a demand for the souls of all the sons of men because of sin. But only the sons of God—those in Christ—will escape judgment.
"But as many as received Him, to them He gave the power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe in His name: who were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God." (John 1:12-13).
This privilege is not just about escaping eternal judgment—it also carries earthly benefits:
● Divine protection from destruction (Psalm 91:10-11).
● Supernatural provision as heirs of God’s kingdom (Philippians 4:19).
● Freedom from generational curses through the blood of Jesus (Galatians 3:13).
● Eternal life and security in Christ (Romans 8:1-2).
Accessing Your Supernatural Privileges
God has already given His only begotten Son for our redemption. But this privilege must be received by faith and enforced through our walk with God.
How To walk in these privileges:
✅ Acknowledge your identity in Christ – You are no longer just a son of men; you are a child of God.
✅ Exercise faith – Believe in and enforce your covenant rights through prayer and obedience.
✅ Live in obedience – God’s supernatural provisions flow through those who abide in Him.
The Ultimate Privilege
Just as David had the authority to spare Mephibosheth, God has the authority to spare us from eternal judgment—but only through Jesus Christ. This is the ultimate privilege of faith.
You don’t have to remain a son of men, bound by the limitations of the flesh. In Christ, you are a son of God, adopted into His family, covered by His covenant, and destined for life—now and forever!
