Overcoming the Most Subtle Kind of Fear

Overcoming the Most Subtle Kind of Fear: The Fear of Man

One of the most insidious traps Satan uses to lead people into disobedience is the fear of man. This fear, though subtle, is a hallmark of his deceptive ways. Scripture warns us that "the fear of man brings a snare" (Proverbs 29:25), and nowhere is this more evident than in the account of the fall in the Garden of Eden.

The Subtlety of Satan’s Strategy

Genesis 3:1 says, "Now the serpent was more subtil than any beast of the field which the LORD God had made." The word subtil means cunning or crafty. Satan’s subtlety lay in targeting the woman first, knowing she had received the command secondhand through Adam (Genesis 2:16-17).

Once Eve ate the fruit, Adam faced a dilemma: obey God or stay aligned with his wife. Even though he knew eating the fruit was a rebellion against God, he chose to follow his wife, likely out of fear of losing her or damaging their relationship. It was not Satan he feared—it was man.

This is not a critique of women. If the roles had been reversed, the outcome might have been the same. The point is that Adam allowed his emotional attachment to override his trust and obedience to God.

The Real Test of Faith

The true test of faith is not primarily about conquering the fear of Satan. It is about overcoming the fear of man—the fear of rejection, ridicule, or strained relationships. To obey God fully, we must trust Him absolutely, even when it means standing alone or going against the expectations of others.
"The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom" (Proverbs 9:10). When we fear God above all else, we are freed from the snare of the fear of man.

Practical Takeaways
• Identify the Fear: Are you more concerned about what others think than about what God commands?

• Trust God Fully: Faith in God empowers you to choose obedience over approval.

• Prioritize God’s Voice: Like Peter and the apostles declared, "We must obey God rather than men" (Acts 5:29).

Overcoming the fear of man is a journey of aligning your heart with God’s will. Trust Him completely, and He will give you the courage to stand firm.

Prayer Against the Fear of Man

Father,
I come before You with a heart that desires to please You above all else. I acknowledge that the fear of man can be a subtle snare, pulling me away from complete trust and obedience to You. Today, I surrender my fear of rejection, ridicule, or disapproval into Your hands.

Lord, help me to fear You alone, for Your Word says, “The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom” (Proverbs 9:10). Strengthen my heart to trust in You completely, knowing that You are my refuge and shield.
Give me the courage to stand firm in my faith, even when the opinions of others press against me. Like the apostles, may I boldly declare, “We must obey God rather than men” (Acts 5:29). Fill me with Your Spirit, so that I may walk in love and truth, guided by Your wisdom and not by the approval of others.

Father, I renounce every spirit of fear, doubt, and compromise. I declare that I am not a servant of man’s opinion but a servant of Christ, for Your Word reminds me, “If I were still trying to please people, I would not be a servant of Christ” (Galatians 1:10).

Empower me, Lord, to love others deeply while keeping You first in my heart. Teach me to seek Your will above all else and to rely on Your strength to fulfill it. Thank You for delivering me from every snare and for giving me a spirit of power, love, and a sound mind (2 Timothy 1:7).

In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen.
