THE COVENANT OF GOD: A Call to Faith A covenant is a divine agreement, initiated by God, that establishes a relationship between Him and humanity based on His promises and faithfulness. It is not a casual or emotional arrangement but a binding commitment rooted in God's unchanging character and His desire to bless and redeem His people.
In Genesis 17:18-21, God made a covenant with Abraham, promising to establish it through Isaac, the child of promise. Abraham’s plea for Ishmael revealed his concern, but God demonstrated that His covenant was not based on human effort or emotion but on His sovereign plan and faithfulness. God assured Abraham that His promise would be fulfilled, saying, “My covenant will I establish with Isaac” (Genesis 17:21). This reminds us that God’s covenant is always tied to His specific promises, which He alone has the power to fulfill.
Fast forward to the New Testament, and we see the fulfillment of God's ultimate promise through Christ, who is the mediator of a better covenant, as stated in Hebrews 8:6:
“But now hath he obtained a more excellent ministry, by how much also he is the mediator of a better covenant, which was established upon better promises.”
God’s Covenant and His Faithfulness
God’s covenant is a declaration of His faithfulness. If He makes a promise, He will fulfill it because He cannot deny Himself. As He said in Psalm 89:34:
“My covenant will I not break, nor alter the thing that is gone out of my lips.”
God’s covenants are not based on human effort or perfection but on His ability to bring His word to pass. Abraham is a powerful example of this. Despite the physical impossibility of Sarah bearing a child, Abraham believed God. The scripture describes his unwavering faith.
“He staggered not at the promise of God through unbelief; but was strong in faith, giving glory to God; and being fully persuaded that, what he had promised, he was able also to perform.” (Romans 4:20-21).
This shows us that the key to walking in God's covenant is faith—trusting in His ability to do what He has promised, even when circumstances appear impossible.
The Better Covenant Through Christ
The covenant through Christ is the ultimate expression of God's faithfulness. Unlike the covenants with Abraham or Moses, the new covenant is based on better promises—eternal life, forgiveness of sins, and the indwelling of the Holy Spirit. This covenant is not written on tablets of stone but on the hearts of believers¹. In this covenant, Jesus Christ mediates on our behalf, securing the promises of God with His own blood. As Paul declares in 2 Corinthians 1:20:
“For all the promises of God in him are yea, and in him Amen, unto the glory of God by us.”
A Call to Faith
To embrace God’s covenant is to trust in His unchanging nature and His power to fulfill His word. God does not enter into covenants lightly or emotionally; they are rooted in His eternal purpose. Just as Abraham believed against all odds, we too are called to place unwavering faith in God’s promises.
Whatever God has spoken over your life, He is able to bring it to pass. As He said to Jeremiah:
“I am watching over my word to perform it” (Jeremiah 1:12).
Faith activates the covenant. It opens the door for God’s promises to manifest in your life. If He has promised it, He will do it. There is no obstacle too great, no situation too hard for the God of the covenant.
Let this truth inspire your faith: the God who promised is faithful. He will not break His covenant or fail to fulfill His word. Trust Him, for He is able to do exceedingly, abundantly above all that we ask or think.²
Conclusion
God’s covenant is His guarantee. It is His assurance that what He has spoken, He will accomplish. Your role is to believe, stand firm, be patient, and trust in His faithfulness. God never breaks His covenant if you don't let go of it. Rest in the knowledge that the same God who kept His covenant with Abraham, Isaac, and David is the God who will keep His promises to you. He is the unchanging, unfailing, covenant-keeping God.
