LADDER OF WISDOM
LADDER OF WISDOM
The purpose of a ladder is to climb heights. A ladder is made up of many rungs. See wisdom as the ladder of life. You can climb as high as you want in life with wisdom.
But the fear of the Lord is the first rung in the ladder called wisdom. Another way of saying that is this: the fear of the Lord is the foundation of wisdom. The Bible says it best:
"The fear of the LORD is the BEGINNING of wisdom: and the knowledge of the holy is understanding." (Proverbs 9:10)
It is the fear of the Lord that opens us up to the other glorious steps in the wisdom ladder. Without it, you are climbing nowhere. When you appear to be climbing without the fear of the Lord, you are only heading for a great fall. Lord, have mercy!
When you have the fear of the Lord, God Himself will arrange to see that you have every wisdom you need for your deliverance, guidance, and growth. That was the testimony of Cornelius the Centurion, as seen in Acts Chapter 10:
"A devout man, and ONE THAT FEARED GOD with all his house, which gave much alms to the people, and prayed to God always." (Acts 10:2)
Because Cornelius feared God, God supernaturally arranged for his eternal salvation. He mobilized angels, the Holy Spirit, and His choicest servant, Peter, to ensure Cornelius and his household were saved. Cornelius needed the wisdom for the eternal salvation of his soul, and God provided it.
This story also explains why some people don’t respond to the gospel of Christ. They lack the fear of the Lord, and their hearts are not yet primed for salvation. However, the Holy Spirit works to convict and draw such hearts (John 16:8).
Why We Need Wisdom
We need wisdom for:
Salvation
Healing and health
Prosperity
Marriage
Family
Relationships
Business
Ministry
Peace
The fear of the Lord is the beginning of it all.
"Wisdom is the principal thing; therefore get wisdom: and with all your getting get understanding." (Proverbs 4:7)
Walking in the Fear of the Lord
Walking in the fear of the Lord is not about terror but about reverent awe, deep respect, and love for God. This fear leads to obedience, worship, and intimacy with Him. As we grow in the fear of the Lord, we also grow in wisdom, and God equips us to navigate every area of life successfully.
To cultivate the fear of the Lord, we can:
Meditate on God’s Word: Regularly studying the Scriptures reveals God’s holiness and His expectations for us.
Practice Obedience: Living in alignment with God’s commands builds a reverent relationship with Him.
Live Prayerfully: Dependence on God through prayer fosters humility and reverence.
Reflect on His Majesty and Grace: Contemplating God’s greatness and love deepens our awe and devotion.
Balancing Fear with Love
While the fear of the Lord is foundational, it is perfectly balanced by the love of God. The Bible teaches that the love of God casts out fear (1 John 4:18) but does not eliminate the reverence we owe Him. Instead, His love draws us closer and makes obedience joyful rather than burdensome. This balance ensures our walk with God is both humble and confident.
Prayer
Father, in the name of Jesus Christ, possess me with the Spirit of the fear of the Lord. Grant me quick understanding in the fear of the Lord and help me to walk in reverent obedience all my days. Teach me to balance reverence with the confidence of Your love. May I grow in wisdom in every area of my life and glorify You in all I do. Amen.
