GOD IS MERCIFUL AND ABLE

One small lesson I have learnt from the word of God is never to doubt or question God's ability. All things are possible with God. There is nothing too hard for Him to do. But if I desire help from God my faith must be in two of His eternal attributes.

1. I need faith in the MERCY of God.

2. And I need faith in the POWER or ability of God.

There were terrible consequences, in the Old Testament, for those who doubted the ability of God. Therefore one can confidently say that it is a sure way to miss out on the help of God in the dispensation of Christ.

LESSON FROM TWO BLIND MEN

We can learn from the faith of two blind men who came to Jesus Christ crying for His mercy.

"And when Jesus departed thence, TWO BLIND men followed him, crying, and saying, You Son of David, HAVE MERCY ON US.

And when he was come into the house, the blind men came to him: and Jesus saith unto them, Believe you that I AM ABLE to do this? They said unto him, Yea, Lord.

Then touched he their eyes, saying, ACCORDING TO YOUR FAITH be it unto you." (Matthew 9:27-29).

Jesus asked them if they believed in His ability to open their eyes. It could have been any two of us today with whatever is our problem that we consider to be impossible from the human perspective. Jesus is the same yesterday, today and forever¹. It is not enough for us to cry out for His MERCY. We also need faith in His ABILITY

THE LEPER WHO UNDERSTOOD THE BALANCE

Scripture also tells us about a leper who understood that the two must be in place for him to receive his healing.

"When Jesus was come down from the mountain, great multitudes followed him.

And, behold, there came a leper and WORSHIPPED HIM, saying, Lord, if YOU WILL, YOU CAN make me clean.

And Jesus put forth his hand, and touched him, saying, I WILL; be you clean. And immediately his leprosy was cleansed." (Matthew 8:1-3).

THE WILLINGNESS OF GOD has been settled forever with the coming of Christ and His death on the Cross.

That is His grace, His mercy and His love for humanity.

"He that SPARED NOT HIS OWN SON, but delivered him up for us all, how shall he not with him ALSO FREELY GIVE US ALL THINGS?” (Romans 8:32).

If it is forgiveness you need, God is willing (merciful enough) to give it to you through Christ Jesus.

Whatever you need; His grace and mercy is always available to supply it. But we must not doubt or question His ability to do so.

Faith acknowledges God's ability to do whatever His word says. But unbelief questions God's ability.

We must not consider our need greater than God’s ability to bring His word to pass. God always takes it as a personal insult. In the Old Testament it provoked His wrath.

The God who raised Jesus from the dead after three days is able to handle your situation by the same resurrection power.

PLEADING THE ABILITY OF GOD

MOSES, the great intercessor for Israel knew that God was sensitive about His ability. Even when the people sinned, He made it a strong reason in his plea to God.

"Now if you shall kill all this people as one man, then the nations which have heard the FAME OF YOU will speak, saying,

Because the LORD was NOT ABLE to bring this people into the land which he sware unto them, therefore he hath slain them in the wilderness.

And now, I beseech you, let the POWER OF MY LORD be great, according as you have spoken, saying,

The LORD is longsuffering, and of great mercy ..." (Numbers 14:15-18).

NEVER QUESTION GOD'S ABILITY

As already mentioned, people who questioned God's ability in the Old Testament paid terribly for it.

"Yea, they spake AGAINST God; they said, CAN GOD furnish a table in the wilderness?

Behold, he smote the rock, that the waters gushed out, and the streams overflowed; CAN HE give bread also? CAN HE provide flesh for his people?

Therefore the LORD HEARD THIS, and was WROTH: so a fire was kindled against Jacob, and ANGER also came up against Israel;

Because they BELIEVED NOT in God, and TRUSTED NOT IN HIS SALVATION" (Psalms 78:19-22).

In conclusion, faith worships God. TRUE WORSHIP must believe and acknowledge both the MERCY and ABILITY of God. The mercy of God has no impact without the power of God.
