THE TEST OF WISDOM

Imagine that you have a dream invitation by a great king. As you come into his palace you are immediately ushered into a beautiful room by a gorgeous guide. Facing you, as you enter the luxuriously carpeted room, is a large polished mahogany table. You are able to identify the treasures on the table. A gold chain, a gold wristwatch, a large diamond ring, a king class laptop computer, a mobile phone, a bundle of cash in dollars and two keys. Upon enquiry you are told that one of the keys is to one of the king's cars and the other is to a brand new house. Then you also notice that to one corner of the table, against the wall, is a beautiful polished brown leather bag, packed and closed. As you pause to admire the beauty of these treasures, for they are all in gold, except for the diamond ring; you are suddenly told that any one of them will be yours if you would only ask.

WHAT WILL YOU ASK FOR?

Should I ask for the house key? Should I ask for the car key? Or should I choose the bundle of money? As you stand pondering on what to choose, your thoughts are interrupted by your guide. "Sir, the bag is also part of your choice." Your decision is further complicated by that new information. Then you reason within yourself, "After all it is written, money answers all things." With that you decide to go for the bundle of money.

"Give me the bundle of money", you finally announced.

"Very well", answered your guide. "It will be presented to you when you are leaving. Now the king is ready to receive you."

As you begin the long walk down the hall to the king's throne room, your curiosity takes the better part of you. "Please may I ask, what is in the beautiful leather bag?"

"Everything else on the table is inside that bag. The king can afford it", she answered without breaking her stride or even looking in your direction. It sounded more like a rebuke.

"Everyone of the king's guests must go through that test. It sets the tone for the meeting. Why didn't you ask before choosing, sir? Everyone who asked for what was in the bag always chose the bag. The bag is meant for those who ask questions. Sir, when you get to the king, ask questions."

This illustration is about THINGS and WISDOM. If you study the scriptures carefully you will discover two classifications of things. There is WISDOM. Then there are THINGS. You have to know the value of wisdom to make it your priority choice. Wisdom contains in it all the things you desire. You only need to unpack it. Instead of going for things one by one; you can always go for wisdom at once. Wisdom is for those who ask questions.

"WISDOM is the PRINCIPAL THING; therefore GET WISDOM: and with all your getting GET UNDER STANDING." (Proverbs 4:7).

God is the only wise God. That also makes Him the only source of wisdom. We can only be stewards of His divine wisdom. The multifaceted wisdom of God is the principal tool for living. There is a dimension of God's wisdom reserved for everyone of his children according to His purpose and calling for their lives. With that wisdom they are to serve or help their generation. But we must seek wisdom from God.

God created all things by wisdom.

  1. There are the things He created.

  1. And there is the wisdom to create the things.

SO THERE ARE TWO POSSIBILITIES IN PRAYER.

  1. You can either ask God for things.

  1. Or you can ask God for wisdom for the things.

God has given us His counsel that it is better to ask for wisdom for the things than to ask for the things themselves.

Things are temporal. If you want a permanent blessing it is better to ask for wisdom for whatever you desire.

"Therefore I say unto you, What things soever YOU DESIRE, WHEN YOU PRAY, believe that you receive them, and you shall have them." (Mark 11:24).

Wisdom is more precious than rubies: and all the things YOU CAN DESIRE are not to be compared unto her." (Proverbs 3:13, 15).

"For WISDOM is better than rubies; and all the things that may BE DESIRED are not to be compared to it." (Proverbs 8:11).

Wisdom is better than all things because it consists of all things. The thing you desire is inside of wisdom. Whatever God has called you to be is inside of wisdom. If you get the wisdom you get the thing. If you get the thing without wisdom you cannot keep it. It is wisdom that makes things yours. Otherwise things will have you.
